Driving an automatic car is a very different experience from driving a manual car, and there’s no right answer as to which one you should choose. It’s all about personal preference. Here we set out the reasons we believe learning in an Automatic car is better than in a manual car:
It’s quicker!
As you don’t have a clutch pedal or gear lever to worry about, it is much quicker and easier to drive an automatic car. This is going to save you time and money and means you can get to test standard much quicker than someone learning in a manual car.
All cars will be automatic by 2035!
You are future proofing your driving! The UK government has set a deadline of 2035 for all new cars sold in the UK to be either fully electric or Hybrid. These cars do not have manual gearboxes. From 2035 you will not be able to buy a new car whose sole means of propulsion is an internal combustion engine (Petrol or Diesel). Car Manufacturers across the globe are already shifting away from internal combustion and therefore manual cars, favouring newer technologies and automatic transmission!
Ease of use for nervous drivers
Automatic cars are significantly easier to drive than manual cars. The ease of use comes because there is no gear stick or clutch pedal to worry about. Driving on the UK’s busy roads is becoming increasingly more challenging and driving an automatic car allows the driver to focus a lot more on the road and a lot less on vehicle control.
You can’t stall an automatic car!
There is no clutch pedal, which means you can’t stall.
Automatic cars also provide a smoother ride for everyone inside the car, as the chances of stalling and jerky gear changes are taken away.
Physical inclusivity
Automatic cars are often the preferred choice for people with physical limitations or certain medical conditions that may restrict their ability to control a car. Learning in an automatic car provides a more accessible pathway to driving for these individuals, enabling more control over their vehicle and a more pleasurable driving experience. Automatic cars are also much more easily modified for those individuals that require alternative means of vehicle control, such as hand operated accelerator/brake control.
Obviously there will always be a number of people that need to be able to drive a manual vehicle and for those people Automatic driving lessons may not be suitable. This is always down to your own preference and personal needs, but why make driving harder than it needs to be?
